Hell I just need to stop reading that shit.
Quite simply a brilliant Q&A tonight. Wow George Brandis has his moments and was very impressed with the women on the panel and of course the wonderful Chris Bowen.
RACIAL DISCRIMINATION ACT: I just I can’t understand this point of argument that freedom of speech includes the freedom to racially vilify someone. I remember this Andrew Bolt article, we reviewed it in VCE (a few years ago now) what he implied was appalling saying that some people were using their “ties” to aboriginality to their advantage to put it plainly. The people he offended had every right to take him on in a class action there are consequences for making bigoted comments. I’m all for free speech and freedom of opinion but what good does it do to allow people to make overtly racist comments and offend without any notion of reprimand. Allowing people to insult people based on their ethnicity and race just empowers racists to just hide under “it’s free speech.” It’s not it’s wrong and should be legislated on.
Also wow George Brandis had a hard time trying to justify repealing 18c and very impressed that Sharri Markson has her own views rather than follow her employer blindly as the Australian does when it comes to government policy.
WOMEN AND QUOTAS/CORPORATE GENDER REPORTING: I believe that we live in a meritocracy and people are judged based on merit. Though I disagree with the notion of a quota because it implies women aren’t getting the position on merit just because of obligation it’s a very good point to make that maybe a quota will bring on cultural and social change. So eventually women are recognised through merit without a quota as it should be. And George Brandis having one women on your cabinet makes you the farthest thing from ‘gender blind.’ And to the twitterer saying why isn’t there a “gay quota” in parliament gender is a whole lot different to sexual orientation.
Again with corporate gender reporting it’s a way to make sure women can break through the glass ceiling and more importantly have equal opportunities and equal pay as their male counterparts.
CHINESE BUYING AUSTRALIAN HOUSES: This is what’s wrong with Australia. Of the total value housing finance commitments $264 billion the “Chinese’ invested $5 billion, that’s less than 4%. Not to mention ‘Chinese’ includes people of other Asian countries not China. This kind of fear mongering is why Australia in an inherently racist, xenophobic country.
INDIGENOUS QUALITY OF LIFE/WHY RECOGNISE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE: Like Reconciliation recognising indigenous people in the constitution is the next step to ‘closing the gap’ as George Brandis said we can’t underestimate the important of symbolism. But Marcia is completely right in saying the right question has to be asked. We don’t want a repeat of 1999 where a poor model of a republic could have been successful. It needs to be right.
Oh dear the ignorance in our community. I’d just like to commend all the panellists for shutting the questioner down with grace especially Marcia who looked incredibly annoyed with the question. It just shows how little people do know about indigenous culture and history, and Pyne wants to change the syllabus to focus on the Magna Carta….
CHRIS KENNY, TONY ABBOTT & THE CHASER: I’ll be honest I didn’t think much of this sketch when it was on The Hamster Decides neither did Chris Kenny’s son when he wrote that article about it but one thing for sure is it’s been dragged out for way too long. I mean they called him a dog fucker, it was crass but can we just move on, it was a joke, it was satire, no one took it seriously. It certainly isn’t worthy of a defamation suit. Though I like how George Brandis wasn’t so quick as to defend the Chaser as he did Andrew Bolt.
